All eyes of the racing world start to focus on Daytona Beach, Florida for the 51st running of NASCAR's greatest, the Daytona 500. With all of the recent changes to the drivers, teams and owners, it is very much a "wait and see" feel for this Daytona 500. So many questions that are about to be answered. How will Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman perform with their new teams running with Hendrick equipment? Will Mark Martin finally win NASCAR's greatest race? Can Dale Jr. finally win a NASCAR Championship? How will Bobby Labonte do in the 96? Can David Ragan continue his strong showing during the 2008 NASCAR season? Can Kahne or any Dodge make a run in the NASCAR 2009 season? How will Clint Bowyer do with his new team? What kind of impact will Joey Logano and Scott Speed have on the NASCAR 2009 season? These and many more questions will start to be answered next week.
With all these unanswered questions, it makes predictions for the NASCARs greatest show very difficult. But, I'll do my best to try and predict who will be in the top 10 and the top 3 places in order. Here are the drivers I feel will be in the top 10 for the 51st Daytona 500. 1) Kyle Busch; he showed last year he was NASCAR's best driver on the Plate tracks. 2) Dale Jr.; through the years he has proven over and over he can avoid the "big one" and put himself in position to get the checkered flag. 3) Jeff Gordon; after all, he is the leader of all active drivers with 6 wins at Daytona. 4) Jimmie Johnson; out of his 14 starts at Daytona he has been in the top ten 8 times and in the top five 5 times. How can you not pick the 48 team to be in any top 10? 5) Denny Hamlin; he lead laps at both Daytona races last year. I think he will find a way to be in the mix this year. 6) Carl Edwards; with a strong second place showing in the July race at Daytona, he proved he has the skills to get the job done at this monster 2.5 mile tri-oval. 7) Mark Martin; he will be the sentimental favorite to win his first Daytona 500. Who will ever forget his showdown in the 2007 Daytona 500 which he lost by .02 seconds to Kevin Harvick? Will Martin finally get it done driving with Hendrick Motorsports equipment? 8) Kasey Kahne; he finished in the top 10 in both Daytona races last year. He is very comfortable at the speedways and he has the results to prove it. 9) Robby Gordon; his is typically a road course ringer. However, last year he was also in the top ten at both Daytona races. Look for this single car team to have another strong showing at NASCARs grandest stage. 10) Bobby Labonte; look for a strong showing from the 96 team. No doubt Labonte has the skills to run up front. I feel the 96 team will finally give him the equipment to make a run front with the Big Dogs. That is my top 10.
Now the hard part. To pick the top 3. I see it going down like this: Hendrick Motorsports hooking up at the end, pushing their new team mate to victory lane. 3rd place will be Jeff Gordon, 2nd place will be Dale Jr. glued to the bumper of the 2009 Daytona 500 Champion, Mark Martin.
What are your top 10 and 3 predictions for the 51st Daytona 500?
